"Bits & Pieces: A Culture of Scrap"

Kaviar Forge & Gallery is pleased to present visual artist T.B. Jackson-Williams’ "Bits & Pieces: A Culture of Scrap" January 15 through March 14, 2009. What most people would toss out as scrap T.B. Jackson-Williams has put to use creating unique and thought provoking images. Viewed up close with all of the intricacies and with a step back to see the whole, Jackson-Williams’ stunning illustrated commentaries range from personification and mythology to daily life using the entire color spectrum provided by magazines, newsprint, and decorative papers. Jackson-Williams’ approach to form and color is reminiscent of such artistic giants as Alphonse Mucha, Mary Cassatt, Gustav Klimt, and Chuck Close. There is evidence of the specific influences in her work while maintaining a singularly distinct style and inventiveness. "Pandora’s Sphere" depicts a young girl tenderly holding Earth in her hands that rest in her lap. "I like the softness of Cassatt where the colors don’t really abruptly go from one to the other but kind of a gradation." Pandora looks out to the viewer while surrounded by a universe of quiet serenity, almost blending into her environment, as she softly embraces our chaotic world.

T.B. Jackson-Williams’ mosaics have the look of watercolor or acrylic paintings yet are solely created by the deliberate placement of paper. Rarely ever sketching before starting a mosaic or choosing paper based on the text, Jackson-Williams relies on her mind’s eye and quiet meditations to comprise her art. The faces in her work reflect the feeling of the overall composition depicting every circumstance from lighthearted to focused and contemplative to troubled. The viewer is inquisitively drawn into her work by an unspoken conversation typically coaxed by the character’s face. "I try to make the people in my work look back at you while you’re looking at them. Even the images I do that have their eyes averted, I try to give the appearance that they have just looked away momentarily." The eye contact or action of each piece develops an individual story with each viewer begging the answers to such questions as "What are you smirking at?" or "What’s on your mind at this very moment?" Despite all attempts to not be lured in, it is inevitable that at least one work by T.B. Jackson-Williams will have a quizzical affect on the viewer posed by the subject.

Color is among the many champions of Jackson-Williams’ work, currently fascinated and inspired by photorealist artist Chuck Close’s technical use of "bits of calculated color, texture, and individual shapes." She uses a variety of papers to compose each piece, colors meticulously placed to create an array of visual accomplishments up close and from a distance. Faces are intricately marbled by layers of natural tones with hints of flushing in the cheek and lips. Backgrounds are complimentary subjects, fluidly adding light and texture. Occasionally words from magazines or newsprint help to fulfill the theme of the work to give a literal portrayal in tandem with the visual depiction. Ultimately T.B. Jackson-Williams puts together a puzzle of matchless pieces bringing forth profound, complex works of art.

Opening Reception for artist T.B. Jackson-Williams will be held at Kaviar Gallery in conjunction with the FAT Friday Trolley Hop on Friday January 30, 2009. Artist/blacksmith Craig Kaviar will also be holding a live forging demonstration at 7:30 PM at Kaviar Forge, located directly behind Kaviar Gallery. Watch as the environmentally-friendly forge, heated to 3000 degrees with waste vegetable oil, softens steel like butter before it is crafted into unique pieces of artwork. The heat of the flame continues outside the gallery with the spectacular fire breathing skills of Aaron Morris at 7 PM and 8 PM. Admission to the gallery, forging demonstration, and fire breathing performance is free.

Kaviar Forge & Gallery is committed to facilitating support for the artistic community by providing opportunities for new and emerging artists along with well seasoned artists who continue to perfect their craft. Kaviar Gallery provides rotating displays of fine, hand-crafted works in metal, ceramics, fiber art, glass, jewelry, wood, painting, sculpture, and artistic wedding rings.

Gallery Hours: Wednesday – Friday 12 to 6 PM and Saturday 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.
