Fred
DiGiovanni:
Alyeska (
Alaska
)
“The
Great
Land
”

Landscapes
always contain more than they immediately reveal, offering a
promise of secrets shared with those who have the patience to see. In
traditional photography there is the implicit hope that the snap of the
shutter will allow that promise to be fulfilled, that the chemistry of the
film and printing processes will become alchemy, transforming the basic
act of looking into the rarer act of seeing and sharing.
Louisville photographer Fred DiGiovanni shares the work that he did in the
summer of 2005 in the northern country of the Aleut people, Alyeska,
“The Great Land”, which we know as Alaska. The gelatin silver images
in this show were all processed by hand and printed by the artist, a
series of straight land/seascapes and abstract compositions
â?oAs a full-time teacher, I worked at my photography 2 months every year
. . . during the summer. I would travel to different pats of the world
and take photographs, process the film, make contact sheets and then file
the work away. Now I have the time to go back and print my work from
years past, creating the images that you see today.
Fred DiGiovanni grew up on Long Island, outside of New York City. He just
recently retired from a 27 1/2 year career as a Middle School Art teacher
for the Louisville/Jefferson County Public Schools (I have known since
I was 8 years old that I wanted to teach art. I was inspired by my
second grade teacher, Miss Higgins, who instilled a love of art within
me.).
