Kentucky-wide Show at Kaviar Gallery
Kaviar Forge & Gallery is hosting its second exhibition "Artists in our Midst", works created by artists who live or work in Kentucky. This exhibition is held in conjunction with a competition for a best in show Grand Prize of $500 and Solo Exhibition to be announced. The first "Artists in our Midst" exhibition was held in the former gallery situated next to Kaviar Forge and was limited to Louisvilles Crescent Hill and Clifton neighborhoods. With the larger Frankfort Avenue gallery location opening in August of 2007, the call for artists this year extended to the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky. Submissions from all over the state were accepted then selected by a jury to progress in the competition. Brion Clinckingbeard, Deputy Director/Chief Curator at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft headed the jury. The range of artists and volume of submissions proved to be a demanding yet welcomed challenge for the panel. The talent, ingenuity, and craftsmanship exemplified by the contributing artists goes unmatched, an impressive display of Kentucky artisans in various ranges of media and expertise. This years call for artists was an undeniable success. "My direction in art is somewhere between photo-realism and abstract. I've long admired the work that comes from Kaviar Forge and I'm honored to be able to show my work in a great space and amongst other talented artists." Andy Cook, Sculptor/Ink Artist The exhibition includes works from over thirty artists in several different mediums. Woodworker Mark Whitley creates contemporary, original furniture of native hardwoods. His piece "Spectrum" a combination of cherry and ash is a "necessaries chest" that is traditionally joined and exquisitely crafted, exuding distinct personality. Painter James Russell May creates organic, natural forms combining representational and abstract images. "Egg" depicts a poised, natural human form, skin tone precisely marbled, attributing softness against a bubbling and undefined milieu of striking green. Sculptor, Daniel Gimbel, a self-taught artist specializing in stone carving has themes ranging from Japanese Tea Gardens to Archaic and Classical Greco-Roman figural styles, as well as Primitivism and Post-Impressionism. "Ophelia" is a stellar demonstration of his Classical style bust with elongated features that seem to change from every viewpoint. Painter Kerri Horine brings a certain opposing combination of style in her paintings with the ubiquitous imagery of tattooing providing a punch of color to the surrounding monochromatic figures and landscapes. The sweeping style of "On the River" is contemplative yet riveting. "Kaviar Gallery has provided a unique opportunity for artists to compete and exhibit their works across the various media. Judging works of painting, sculpture, and photography in a single competition is rare, but Kaviar is well under way to making this a regional tradition." - Dr. Richard Deutsch, Photographer Kaviar Forge & Gallery is committed to facilitating support for the artistic community by providing opportunities for new and emerging artists along with well seasoned artists who continue to perfect their craft. With the "Artist in our Midst" exhibition and competition the goal is to show Kentuckians what Kentucky has to offer artistically. The show opens July 10 and runs through September 27, 2008. An Artists Reception will be held on July 25th from 6-9 PM coinciding with the Frankfort Avenue Trolley Hop. Gallery Hours: Wednesday Friday 12- 6 PM and Saturday 12- 4 PM or by appointment.
