Working with a Master
Kentucky premier artist/blacksmith Craig Kaviar is opening his workshop to teach a beginner blacksmith class. Working in his studio the students will get hands on experience working on coal, natural gas and his unique waste vegetable oil forge. While learning basic techniques the students will make simple item for themselves including J hooks, nails, leaves and finally a forge welded fireplace poker. The next class is scheduled to start Saturday January 24th, 2007 from 9 AM to Noon which runs for 5 weeks. Classes are limited to 10 student, cost $400 includes all materials and there is one working scholarship available. Mr. Kaviar has been forging at his smithy in Louisville, KY for the past 25 years completing such creations as the entrance gates to the Woodford Reserved Distillery, gates and grills at both Christ Church Cathedral and the First Unitarian Church in Louisville, KY, entrance handles to Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Bronze sculpture "Forging Ahead" at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
